Why is it SO PRETTY! I'll also take its platform mates (Cadillacs or Olds). It's a great 1st car as it's big, powerful, auto, power brakes, AND AC!!!

Yup. I figure that if I'm in a crash. I'll win in the acceleration fight between me and stupid merc CLA.

Probably a better choice than the bug you posted about. Both cool cars but very different!

make sure the motors good, those Nailheads get expensive in a hurry because you have to through special parts houses to get parts for them

It's a cool car, but I'm not sure if it's really a good choice for a new driver. At the very least, you should know that bigger, older cars being safer is a complete myth.

While you might have enough mass to do serious damage to a smaller modern car, the lack of modern safety equipment means this is a much more dangerous car to be driving than pretty much anything built in the last 15 25 years. The ancient brakes and boat–like handling will make it much more difficult to avoid an accident, and no crumple zones + no airbags + maybe a lap belt means any crash will be much less survivable. In the end, you've got one less classic on the road, hopefully not a new driver with a steering column through their chest and an engine block in their lap, and a badly damaged new car, the driver of which most likely survived.

If you don't believe me, here's a video of a 1959 Bel Air vs. a 2009 Cruze

My dad had an early '70s Caddy for his first car in the mid-70s. Yeah, that's 10 years newer, but it's still one of those big American landyachts. He says it was probably the scariest thing he's ever driven. A pain to park, started when it wanted to, leaned around the most subtle turns, handled like "first time sex", and my aunt eventually torque-steered it into a tree in 1979. The fact that she lived from that crash is a miracle (it was hers at that point), because the safety equipment in these cars is almost nonexistent. I'd recommend you search for something more recent and manageable. Mid-00's CTS/DTS?

I think a better choice would be to get something newish, but a little scruffy. That way if there are any fender benders or something it's no big deal, and if you're just trying to do donuts or J-turns in an empty parking lot you won't care if you're beating on your car a little. You said your budget is 13k and below?

I know why it torque steered. 400+lbft and fwd along with primitive tire tech is no bueno.

Yup. I've been thinking about getting a Dodge M110 (Deuce and a Half) because YOLO and it's really practical (cheap to fix, can run on ANYTHING, awesome fuel range)

That's a common misconception. Starting in 1967, Eldorados went FWD along with most of the lineup.

I'm not a truck guy, but I know some people are really into the big car/towering over the road/hauling stuff thing, so if that's up your alley go for it. For what it's worth, in my experience 13k is more than enough to buy a solid, reliable car that won't break down, and that's usually cheaper than a car that's just cheap to fix.

If I were in your position I would be looking for something like a Focus or Civic with a manual. I've had more fun driving my girlfriend's no–fucks–given $2500 Focus with a short throw shifter than just about any other car. If RWD is a must then look for an old Mustang or something.

If you want old, quirky, and safe, your options are pretty much limited to Saab, Volvo, and maybe MB. I am a huge truck guy, but having something like a M110 is a terrible idea for a new driver. If you want big and military, I would suggest something like a Chevy CUCV as a first car. Same size as their civilian counterparts, just a bit beefier.
